Synopsis

Way before reggaetón and Bady Bunny ruled the charts, there was one queen who reigned supreme: Queen Celia Cruz.

Celia (2015) tells the incredible rise of Cuban music legend Celia Cruz, long before she became the Queen of Salsa. The series follows young Celia as she fights her way through Havana’s competitive music scene in the 1950s, chasing a dream that few believed was possible.

But fame comes with a price. As her star rises with the iconic band La Sonora Matancera, political upheaval in Cuba forces Celia into exile, forever separating her from the home she loves. Through heartbreak, sacrifice, and unstoppable determination, Celia transforms into a global icon whose voice carries across generations. With dazzling music, vibrant performances, and plenty of behind-the-scenes drama, this bio-novela captures the passion, pain, and rhythm behind a true legend.

Review

Long Live the Queen of Salsa

What got us vibing:
Colombia loves a bio-novela about a musical legend. And while a lot of them end up feeling like budget concert reenactments with extra tears and fake wigs (no shade, but some shade), Celia finally delivers the goods. This one actually feels like a tribute. The performances are sharp, the vibes are immaculate, the vocals bring the chills, and the wardrobe delivers vintage glamour at every turn.

Where it goes off-key:
Let’s just say the 80 episodes didn’t fly by. There’s a whole mini-series living inside this show that could’ve been cut. The mid-series actor swaps mess with story’s rhythm, and clearly many creative liberties were taken. If you’re a Celia Cruz purist, be ready for a few “that did not happen like that” moments.

Worth watching?
Absolutely. Even if you don’t know Celia Cruz from Cardi B’s sample, this series will have you yelling “¡Azúcar!” by episode 3. It’s that good.

Telebesitos Tip 💋
Finally – a Colombian bio-novela that actually gets it. This isn’t your standard cookie-cutter musician story. Celia is a whole mood..
