Synopsis

Girls from Ipanema (2019), originally Coisa Mais Linda, is a Brazilian Netflix original that turns the birth of Bossa Nova into a lush, emotional, and quietly rebellious story about women rewriting the rules. Set in the late 1950s, it moves from the buttoned-up world of São Paulo to the sunlit, bohemian pulse of Rio, where everything feels possible.

At the center is Malu (Maria Casadevall), a polished housewife who arrives in Rio expecting a fresh start, only to discover her husband has vanished with all their money. But instead of going back home, Malu does something radical for her time – she stays, and builds something of her own.

What was supposed to be her husband’s restaurant becomes a Bossa Nova club, a space filled with music, possibility, and just enough defiance to shake the room. But she’s not doing it alone.

Adélia (Pathy Dejesus) steps in as her partner, bringing strength, hustle, and a sharp understanding of the world as a Black woman navigating a system stacked against her. Thereza (Mel Lisboa), a fearless journalist, is out here questioning everything society says women should accept. And Lígia, a gifted singer trapped in a suffocating marriage, is slowly finding her voice both on and off the stage. Together, they form a bond that feels as powerful as the music they’re helping bring to life.

These women are pushing against real barriers – sexism, racism, control, expectations – all while trying to carve out space for themselves in a world that keeps telling them no.

Girls from Ipanema is the kind of show that feels like a mood. Underneath the lux visuals and snappy dialogue, it’s digging into something deeper: freedom, identity, and the cost of choosing your own path.

It’s soulful, heartfelt, and grounded in something real. Because sometimes, the most revolutionary thing you can do… is refuse to disappear.
