Synopsis

Porque el amor manda (2012–2013) is a feel-good Mexican telenovela that blends romance, comedy, and a dash of corporate chaos. Fernando Colunga stars as Jesús García, a kind-hearted dreamer who’s been hustling in Chicago – delivering pizzas by day, studying business by night – after fleeing a controlling relationship back in Monterrey. But when he discovers that his ex, Verónica, has a six-year-old daughter who might be his, Jesús drops everything to return to Mexico and meet her.

His journey back is anything but smooth: he unknowingly transports a suitcase stuffed with illegal cash and ends up arrested at the airport. Though he’s cleared, the money belonged to Rogelio Rivadeneira, a ruthless businessman who vows revenge. Broke and desperate to reconnect with his daughter, Jesús lands a job as a secretary at Rogelio’s company – ironically hired by Alma Montemayor (Blanca Soto), Rogelio’s girlfriend, who’s trying to avoid office drama by hiring someone “unsexy.” But sparks fly between Alma and Jesús, setting off a slow-burn romance full of stolen glances, misunderstandings, and emotional detours.

As Jesús navigates office politics, fatherhood, and his growing feelings for Alma, he’s supported by Chatita, his lovable neighbor with early-stage Alzheimer’s, who becomes his surrogate mom and moral compass. Meanwhile, Rogelio and his scheming brother Fernando do everything they can to sabotage Jesús’s life and career. But love, as always, has its own agenda.

Review

Porque el amor manda (2012)
Review: Business casual never looked this dramatic

What made us smile:
Fernando Colunga proved he could pivot from gallant galán to full-on comedic lead, and he nailed it. His charisma carried the series, blending goofy charm with heart-melting sincerity. Blanca Soto’s trademark elegance brought an icy counterbalance, and together their chemistry popped. The tone was light, fast-paced, heartfelt and packed with banter, making it easy to binge without emotional whiplash.

Where it draggeddd:
Yes, it’s fun, but 182 episodes means the plot couldn’t help but wander into filler-ville. Certain conflicts felt recycled (how many times can an office romance survive sabotage from conniving exes?). And while Colunga was a delight, the script occasionally leaned too hard on slapstick, which undercut some of the more heartfelt moments.

Worth watching?
Absolutely. Porque el amor manda is Fernando Colunga doing comedy, Blanca Soto looking like she owns the world, and an office full of backstabbers, lovers, and dreamers.

Telebesitos Tip 💋
Porque el amor manda is basically a telenovela in business casual: breezy, flirty, and a little absurd, but always entertaining. It never takes itself too seriously, which makes it perfect comfort TV.
