When Televisa launched its “Fábrica de Sueños” project, rebooting iconic novelas as sleek little mini-series, we was living. And Rubí? Perfect pick, the original is iconic. So when this 2020 version dropped, we brewed the cafecito, dimmed the lights, and prepped for drama, diamonds, and delicious betrayal.
Rubí (2020) follows the dangerously beautiful Rubí Pérez (Camila Sodi), a woman who grew up with very little and has exactly zero interest in staying that way. Armed with ambition, killer cheekbones, and a talent for manipulation, Rubí decides that love is optional but luxury is mandatory. So when a wealthy, smitten doctor falls into her orbit, she starts playing a high-stakes game of romance, betrayal, and social climbing that leaves broken hearts scattered like rose petals.
This sleeker reboot of the 2004 iconic villain-led novela condenses the classic story into a tighter, binge-friendly ride. Expect couture outfits, icy stares, and enough ruthless ambition to power an entire penthouse skyline. Rubí isn’t trying to be the hero – she’s here to win. And if a few people get emotionally steamrolled along the way… well, that’s just the price of luxury.
Based on: Rubí (2004)
Where the diamonds sparkled:
Rubí still slays as a character. She’s the antiheroine we love to hate – her ambition is as sharp as her cheekbones. The updated visuals are crisp, the fashion is serving “boardroom Barbie meets revenge runway,” and the shorter format trims the fluff (we don’t need 200 episodes to know she’s toxic, thanks).
Where the sparkle faded:
In this reimagined version of the original, it feels a little like the soul is missing. We came for fireworks and left holding a sparkler. The cast is stacked and Camila Sodi brings the talent and the glam, but the script didn’t quite allow her to deliver the fire that Bárbara Mori lit back in the day.
Worth watching?
New to Rubí? This glossy reboot delivers plenty of style and a morally gray diva worth watching. But if you worship at the altar of the 2004 original, this one may feel a little too curated – less chaotic icon, more museum exhibit.
Telebesitos Tip 💋
The 2004 Rubí is the real diamond. This reboot is more like cubic zirconia – sparkly, but we can all tell the difference.
