Synopsis

O Mecanismo (2018), or The Mechanism, is a gritty, fast-moving 16-episode Netflix thriller that pulls its drama straight from Brazil’s real-life corruption scandals. Created by José Padilha and Elena Soarez, the series dives headfirst into a system so deeply embedded, it starts to feel less like crime… and more like infrastructure.

At the center is Marco Ruffo (Selton Mello), a worn-down federal police officer who has spent years chasing what he sees as a disease infecting the country from the inside. His obsession begins with a seemingly small case involving money launderer Roberto Ibrahim (Enrique Díaz), one of many “doleiros” quietly moving dirty money through the system.

But nothing stays small for long. What starts as routine surveillance explodes into a sprawling investigation touching oil giants, construction empires, and the highest levels of political power. Years later, Ruffo’s protégée Verena Cardoni (Caroline Abras) picks up the torch, determined to take down the machine her mentor could never fully dismantle.

As the case expands, so does the cost – careers, relationships, and personal boundaries all start to erode under the weight of what they uncover. Every win feels temporary, every truth comes with consequences, and the deeper they go, the harder it becomes to tell where justice ends and obsession begins.

O Mecanismo leans into the chaos of power and greed, painting a world where the rules are flexible, the stakes are national, and pulling one thread might unravel everything – including the people trying to fix it.
