Synopsis

Cuéntame cómo pasó (2001) is Spain’s history told through one very relatable family album. This long-running Spanish series (23 seasons, 400+ episodes!) follows Antonio, Mercedes, their kids Inés, Toni, Carlos, and their iconic abuela Herminia as they navigate life from the late 1960s through the early 2000s. From Franco’s dictatorship to Spain’s transition to democracy, every major historical moment is filtered through the eyes of a working-class family trying to keep up with a rapidly changing world.

Narrated by an adult Carlos looking back on his youth, the show blends personal milestones – first loves, heartbreaks, career shifts – with national turning points like the death of Franco, the 1981 coup attempt, and the rise of modern Spain. It’s part historical drama, part emotional rollercoaster, and all heart.

With standout performances by Imanol Arias and Ana Duato, Cuéntame became Spain’s most awarded and most expensive series, spawning international adaptations in Argentina, Italy, Portugal, and Greece. It’s a love letter to memory, resilience, and the messy beauty of growing up in a country finding its voice.
