Synopsis

Pasión prohibida (2013) is Telemundo’s scandalous Miami-set novela that said “age gaps, family drama, and betrayal – and let’s make it sexy.” A remake of the Turkish classic Aşk-ı Memnu, this version stars Mónica Spear (RIP queen) and Jencarlos Canela in a forbidden romance that had viewers screaming at their TVs and clutching their rosaries.

The story unfolds with Bianca Santillana (Mónica Spear), who’s young, petty and drop dead gorgeous. She marries rich older businessman Ariel Piamonte (Roberto Vander) not for love, but to spite her manipulative mother Flavia (Rebecca Jones, serving villain vibes). But old man Ariel has a hot nephew – Bruno – who’s flirty, brooding, and totally off-limits. Naturally, Bianca and Bruno fall into a steamy, secret affair that’s equal parts passion and guilt.

Bruno’s torn between loyalty to his uncle and his obsession with Bianca, while Bianca’s juggling revenge, desire, and a lifetime of emotional damage. Add in Ariel’s daughter Nina, who’s crushing on Bruno (techincally her cousin) and you’ve got a love pentagon with no brakes. The tension builds, secrets unravel, and the ending builds with a finale that will crush your soul.

Based on: Aşk-ı Memnu (Forbidden Love, Turkey, 2008)

Review

If loving him is wrong… this novela is very right.

What kept everyone obsessed:
We can pretty much start and end with Mónica Spear – wow. Her performance is layered, magnetic, iconic and absolutely unforgettable. It’s one of her finest roles, and we miss her deeply. As for the story, the betrayals, the longing, and the slow-burn tension is straight up Shakespeare – just with a Miami zip code and a closet full of stilettos.

What didn’t land as hard:
107 episodes is a lot, and if you’re like us, the pacing may feel a little too slow – this is clearly a novela that savors its drama. And that ending? No spoilers but… devastating. Let’s just say it’s not the kind of wrap-up that leaves you grinning but you will be shaken. Sadly, any hope of a second season disappeared with the tragic passing of Mónica Spear, a loss that still stings in the telenovela world.

Worth watching?
1000%. It’s a must-watch for any serious telenovela fan – and a haunting reminder of just how much talent we lost with Mónica Spear’s untimely death.

Telebesitos Tip 💋
Watch this one when you’re in the mood to feel. And keep tissues nearby – Mónica will break your heart in the best way.
