This 2019 remake of La usurpadora (1998) tackels one of the most iconic telenovelas of all time – with a darker tone, a higher budget, and a splash of political intrigue. In this updated version, twin sisters Paola and Paulina (both played by Sandra Echeverría) are separated at birth, only to be reunited when one of them decides to steal the other’s life. This time, though? The “life” is being the First Lady of Mexico.
When sweet, small-town Paulina discovers she’s the identical twin of Mexico’s First Lady, she doesn’t just freak out – she steps up. After being roped into a wild scheme to impersonate her scandalous sister, Paulina dives headfirst into a world of political secrets, designer gowns, and presidential shade. But this isn’t just a switcheroo – it’s a full-blown mission to clean house at the highest level.
Meanwhile, the real First Lady, Paola, is serving villain vibes with a vengeance, plotting her return and ready to burn it all down.
La usurpadora (2019) is where House of Cards meets Parent Trap with a dash of Reina del Sur – and yes, the drama is presidential.
Based on: La usurpadora (1998)
Credit where it’s due:
Sandra Echeverría came to work, honey. Her dual performance as both scheming Paola and sweet Paulina was the definition of carrying the show on her back. She gave range, glamour, and just enough restraint to keep the drama from spiraling totally into parody.
Where it missed:
For all its modern shine, the story leaned a little too heavily on familiar telenovela beats. The look says “new,” but the energy mostly says “been there, done that.”
Telebesitos Tip 💋
If you’re a Sandra Echeverría fan or just curious to see how Televisa tried to Gen Z-ify a legend, check it out. But if you’re expecting something that matches the legacy of the 1998 classic, lower those expectations, amigos.
