La Mentira (1998) is a classic Mexican telenovela built around one very bad assumption – and about 100 episodes of romantic chaos that could have been avoided by asking a few more questions.
After his brother Ricardo takes his own life following a devastating betrayal, Demetrio Azúnsolo (Guy Ecker) returns to Mexico determined to find the woman responsible. His biggest clue is that her name begins with “V.” Unfortunately, there are two women who fit the bill: sweet, strong-willed Verónica (Kate del Castillo) and her ambitious, spectacularly two-faced cousin Virginia (Karla Álvarez).
Naturally, Demetrio picks the wrong V.
Convinced Verónica destroyed his brother, he seduces her, marries her and sets out to make her pay – only to commit the classic telenovela mistake of actually falling in love with the woman he’s supposed to hate.
Revenge, deception, scorching chemistry and a deliciously wicked villainess make La Mentira pure late-90s Televisa melodrama. And with Kate del Castillo and Guy Ecker bringing the heat, this is one mentira that’s very easy to get sucked into.
