Synopsis

Our queen Victoria Ruffo steps into Carona de lágrimas as Refugio, the ultimate long-suffering novela mamá – raising her three sons, Patricio, Edmundo, and Ignacio, on sheer grit, sacrifice, and about three hours of sleep a night. After the family is forced to start over in Mexico City, Refugio hustles nonstop to keep everyone afloat, even as her eyesight begins to fail. Her goal is simple: give her boys the future she never had.

Unfortunately, those boys come with some very novela-level complications. Patricio (Alejandro Nones) develops champagne dreams and quickly becomes allergic to his humble roots, hiding his real family while trying to impress his wealthy fiancée Olga (Adriana Louvier). Edmundo (José María Torre) starts flirting with shady get-rich-quick schemes, while sweet, steady Ignacio becomes the emotional backbone holding the whole circus together.

Then the secrets start spilling. Lies unravel, betrayals land like emotional uppercuts, and a bombshell revelation about Patricio’s parentage threatens to blow the entire family dynamic to pieces.

Corona de lágrimas is peak tearjerker territory: a mother who loves too much, sons making spectacularly bad decisions, and enough emotional devastation to keep the tissue industry thriving.

Based on: Corona de lágrimas (1965)

Review

Corona de lágrimas (2012) Season 1
Review: Crying in every episode, and somehow still thriving

What got everyone hooked:
José Alberto Castro once again had us sobbing into our snacks with this emotionally rich, beautifully acted drama that pulls on every heartstring. Victoria Ruffo, aka La Reina de las Lágrimas, does what she does best: cry gorgeously while delivering soul-shattering monologues. Her Refugio is the emotional core of the show – a woman who’s strong, selfless, and so tender you want to wrap her in a blanket and make her tea. The dynamic between the brothers has grit too. Mane de la Parra is all heart. Alejandro Nones brought his trademark depth as Patricio (the charmer). And José María Torre gained major recognition for his role as Edmundo.

What made us cry (for the wrong reasons):
No doubt about it, the pacing in the second half gets wobbly, with storylines that feel way more filler than killer. And the writing tripped up a bit too, with some characters making choices so illogical it’s like watching a horror movie and yelling “Girl, do NOT open that door!”

Worth watching?
100%. This is must-watch tv for any true novela fan. It’s heartfelt, powerful, and surprisingly cathartic. C

Telebesitos Tip 💋
No one cries prettier than Victoria Ruffo. No one.
