What happens when a woman with integrity runs for president in a sea of snakes? Drama, danger, and one fierce blowout, that’s what.
La candidata (2016) isn’t your typical novela full of random misunderstandings and decorative villains. This sharp, high-stakes Mexican drama, produced by Giselle González for Televisa, steps straight into the ruthless world of power, corruption, and ambition. Led by Silvia Navarro, it swaps fairy-tale romance for grown-up stakes and real danger.
Regina Bárcenas (Silvia Navarro) is an honorable senator who genuinely wants to improve her country. She’s smart, respected, and married to rising political star Alonso San Román (Rafael Sánchez Navarro), the city’s Head of Government. But when Alonso launches a presidential run, Regina discovers the truth behind the polished image: he’s manipulative, violent, and willing to crush anyone standing between him and total power. Including his own wife.
Then the past walks back in.
Gerardo Martínez (Víctor González), Regina’s former college love, returns as Alonso’s biggest rival in the race for president. While old feelings resurface, Regina also has to deal with Cecilia Aguilar (Susana González), a calculating force who brings fresh betrayal and tension right into her orbit. Trust is scarce, and danger is everywhere.
As her marriage collapses and the threat grows bigger than her personal life, Regina refuses to stay on the sidelines. She chooses to fight back, challenge Alonso’s corrupt machine, and run for president herself. La candidata is about courage under pressure, the cost of power, and what happens when the woman expected to stay quiet becomes the most dangerous player in the room.
Telebesitos Tip 💋
Silvia Navarro delivers one of the best performances of her career and Susana González continues her undefeated streak of being fabulous and ferocious at the same time. The portrayal of Mexican politics occasionally wanders into caricature territory, but bless Televisa for delivering a novela where people aren’t screaming every five minutes. It’s finally giving grown-up drama.
